Getting STITCH-uated

One may think that earning the spot of Olympic Champion comes with just a gold medal. Three years later, I can say that the gold medal, itself, is just icing on the cake; a cake full of opportunities. It was up to me to decide what I was going to do with that “cake”  full of opportunities. I was blessed to have incomparable business mentors and inspiring spiritual guidance, so grasping the opportunities that came with the victory seemed second nature.

In these past three years, I’ve traveled the world inspiring as many souls as I could because sometimes that’s all someone needs; a push, a kick or heck! Even a compliment will do the trick sometimes! We need to be inspired and convinced that we are capable of doing anything we set our minds to. One wise man once told me, “You’re never too young to teach and never too old to learn.” Boy, those words have stuck with me!

As of late, an opportunity has knocked on my door. The return of the Champion! Oh, let me be the first to tell you there’s nothing glamorous about a comeback! It’s not like in the movies, not at all. I’ve had the chance to be back training twice a day and even living the OTC dorm life…as a cave man. The daily hunger I see in these guys on the mat every day at practice is that of a starving lion!

I’m not gonna lie, it was a rough transition… having to trade in the silk pajamas for a sticky, post-practice drenched warmup. Or having to change my alarm clock from noon to 5 a.m., but the transition has been made. I’m back in the zone and every minute I spend on the mat, I spend it with a 2nd place mentality. I’m climbing that mountain just like every other guy on the matt. I share the hunger of a starving lion with these guys! I’m ready to fight like I did back in the Phoenix apartments when I was a kid. This time though, not for Mexican ice cream but for London Gold.

I can honestly say I’m getting STITCHuated to this whole wrestling thing again and feeling dang good about it.

(I took a knee to the face at practice and a few stitches the other day. S/O to Humphrey for it lol)

***I’ll be relocating to Ohio (RTC) in the next couple weeks. You’ll hear about my experiences there on and off the mat in here so stay tuned. Hope you’re as excited as this lion is!

The Fourth of July

Party in the U.S.A.
As the years go by, I keep enjoying the Fourth of July (my favorite holiday) full of patriotism, fireworks and occasional hotdogs. Although the festivities haven’t changed much since I was a kid, the meaning of the holiday has changed, especially in the last few years. I was blessed with the opportunity to represent my country at the most prestigious sporting event in the world and to top it off, my fight of a lion paid off and my dreams of becoming an Olympic Gold Medalist were realized in 2008. I can honestly say I am living the American Dream. This dream didn’t start when I was 12 and declared out loud to myself that I would be an Olympic champ one day, it started years before that. It started exactly 36 years ago today.

The American Dream that was fulfilled on August 19, 2008 started 36 years ago when my mother migrated to this beautiful country where the streets are paved with gold (She soon realized the streets are far from being paved with gold, but that’s beside the point). My mother came with the dream of offering her yet-to-be-conceived children opportunities that, unfortunately, in her native country of Mexico are hard to obtain.

It’s not surprising that my mother has earned the nickname, The Terminator. She has been through so much adversity in her life and she is still standing strong. In these past 36 years, my mother became a permanent resident, worked many jobs and thousands of hours, cooked great Huaraches (my favorite Mexican dish), raised seven children all by herself and missed her youngest son’s greatest accomplishment. She didn’t get to go to Beijing because without her U.S. Citizenship, she couldn’t get a passport. (She anxiously watched the final match live in the wee hours of the morning in Colorado Springs through a computer).

This Fourth of July, the fireworks had a special glow to them not only for me but for my mother, as well. This past Fourth of July, my mother won her own gold medal match when she became a United States Citizen. After 36 long years, she was finally able to celebrate the Fourth of July as an American Citizen. Words cannot describe the look in her face as she waved the tiny U.S. flag she received at the Oath ceremony while the National Anthem played in the background. Such is life that I was unable to be there with her for her special moment. Just as she watched me win gold through a computer screen in 2008, I watched her victorious moment through my computer screen in videos my family sent me.

There’s Always a Second Chance
In the beginning of this year, I fully committed to train for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Although I have fulfilled my lifelong goal of becoming the best in the world, I want to go at it again and grant my mother the opportunity to go to the Games and watch me win gold. This time no computers or slow internet connection will get in the way. This time, we will both have a smile in our faces from ear to ear as our National Anthem plays in the background. Comebacks seem hard sometimes, but I’ve learned to embrace the pressure and remind myself of who’s in my corner. With God and The Terminator (my mother), all things are possible.

Henry Cejudo, Olympic Champion, Has a Voice in Immigration Debate

As an Olympic champion wrestler, Henry Cejudo knows what it’s like to take on the world’s best athletes one-on-one.As a first generation Mexican-American, he knows what it’s like to go up against ignorance, xenophobia and prejudice. He’s hoping to take down both as he returns to competition in search of a second Olympic gold medal.

At 21, Cejudo became a face of the 2008 Olympics when he won a gold medal in freestyle wrestling. He has since become not only a role model, but a powerful voice in the immigration debate as a vocal opponent of the controversial reform measures in his home state of Arizona.

While there might not appear to be obvious overlap, the two passions in his life are far from mutually exclusive.

US Wrestling Gold Medalist Henry Cejudo to Skip MMA for Olympic Run

U.S. Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo’s on-again, off-again flirtation with mixed martial arts has apparently reached an end, and the decorated wrestler will stick with his area of expertise.

In a story published in The New York Times, writer Greg Bishop states that Cejudo recently committed to continue wrestling in hopes of representing the U.S. during the 2012 London Games.

Perhaps more interesting in the story is the potential impact of a new medal fund that would pay wrestlers $250,000 for an Olympic gold medal, which the theory goes will keep wrestlers from bailing on the sport for the potentially bigger payouts of MMA.

The “Living the Dream Medal Fund” will also pay $50,000 for silver, $25,000 for bronze and also distribute cash prizes for world championship medals.

Cejudo was indecisive about his decision for several months, at one time voicing a desire to fight MMA, then talking about potentially boxing professionally. Late in 2008, he was serious enough about MMA that his representatives had talks with Japanese promoters about possibly fighting legendary featherweight Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto.

The 22-year-old Cejudo won gold in the 55 kg (121-pound) weight class.

To date, four U.S. Olympic gold medal wrestlers have transitioned to MMA: Rulon Gardner, Kevin Jackson, Mark Schultz and Kenny Monday. Only Jackson (4-2) fought more than five times.

While increasing the cash awards of medal winners is a positive development for USA Wrestling, it seems unlikely that alone would stop wrestlers intent on fighting in MMA from making the change. Amateur wrestling has never been a sport where money was a real option, so either world-class competitors will stay in it for the love that helped them achieve their high level of success, or they will decide its time to capitalize on their credentials and fight MMA.

USA Wrestling will never be able to offer the money that top-flight MMA fighters can make, but they will always be able to dangle something that its athletes consider priceless: Olympic gold. All things being equal, the decision will come down to finances or idealism.
